Sedation for Dental Anxiety

Dr. Thomas received hospital training during his residency after dental school in oral and intravenous (IV) sedation. He has received sedation licensure examinations by the North Carolina State Dental Board and maintains these licenses by yearly continuing education on the safety and efficacy of sedation. He also trains all staff members on the safe practices of sedation and complete basic life support classes on site each year.

We routinely sedate individuals on an outpatient basis for any procedure which evokes anxiety or fear. We are committed to providing you with comfortable and compassionate care and will take whatever steps necessary to ensure your absolute comfort.

We offer two levels of sedation:

Oral sedation – where we give you medication to take by mouth before your scheduled appointment. You will be relaxed and comfortable during the entire procedure and will often have little or no memory of the visit.

IV (intra-venous) sedation – where we give you medications through an IV to obtain total and complete sedation and you will be absolutely relaxed throughout the procedure with almost no memory of your surgical visit.

The difference between these two types of sedation is that IV sedation allows us to instantly increase the dosage to reach the maximum desired level of sedation. This technique is often preferred for longer surgical procedures and is chosen by the majority of our patients.

Our commitment is that fear should never be an obstacle in allowing you to reach your oral healthcare needs.
